We’ve Got You Surround-ed!

8 May
WHAT IS THE STAGES SURROUND?

Each year Stages Surrounds a play with a series of free events that enrich and provide a more dynamic connection to that play. This year’s Surround focuses on Next To Normal and is presented in cooperation with our community partner, NAMI Metropolitan Houston (our local affiliate of the national organization), who will have information about mental health and advocacy available in the lobby at every performance, and who will provide speakers for select Sunday afternoon post-show discussions.

Also in the lobby during the month of June, an exhibit called What is Normal? will showcase the curated works of art, poetry, photography and writings of area high school students who have participated in a Stages-led workshop exploring the questions of what is “normal” in our society, and what the “normal” family looks like.

AND DID YOU KNOW?

May is Mental Health Month, which began in 1949 to raise awareness of mental health conditions and mental wellness for all. A dialogue and toolkit can be found at Mental Health America’s site.

NAMIwalks
MAY 5

NAMIWALKS–Changing Minds… One Step at a Time is a nationwide fundraising and mental health awareness program that is being held in more than 80 communities around the country in 2012, including right here in Houston.  It is expected that these walks will raise approximately 9 million dollars in 2012 for NAMI and the mental health services it provides to thousands of families across the country.  Stages will participate in the Houston NAMI Walks on Saturday May 5th. You can join us to walk by registering at www.namimetrohouston.org.

IN OUR OWN VOICE
MAY 28, 7pm

In Our Own Voice (IOOV) is a unique public education program developed by NAMI, in which two trained speakers share compelling personal stories about living with mental illness and achieving recovery. IOOV is an opportunity for those who have struggled with mental illness to gain confidence and to share their individual experiences of recovery and transformation. Throughout the IOOV presentation, audience members are encouraged to offer feedback and ask questions. Audience participation is an important aspect of IOOV because the more audience members become involved, the closer they come to understanding what it is like to live with a mental illness and stay in recovery.
